At the end of last week’s newsletter I threw in a casual, last minute recommendation. “I’m about a month late to this one, but I strongly suggest watching One Day on Netflix. (...) I actually still haven’t finished it, but it’s been a nice pre-bedtime treat when I’m wiped from the day,” I wrote naively.
Well, reader, it turns out One Day wasn’t a treat; it actually wrecked me. I won’t spoil the ending for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but it’s a doozy. Heartbreaking, gorgeous, the kind of emotional hangover that stays with you for days. I can’t remember the last time I was so deeply affected by a work of fiction. And I’m not alone; a quick scroll through #onedaynetflix on TikTok has served as both an unofficial emotional support group and a reminder that, for some reason, people love posting videos of themselves crying on the Internet. Without giving too much of the plot away, One Day is a romantic drama that follows two characters on the same date – July 15 – over the course of twenty years. It’s based on a novel with the same name, which I read and loved when I was in college. You might think I would have been emotionally prepared for the ending given that I knew what was going to happen, but it still bowled me over. The adaptation was beautifully executed and touched on so many themes that resonated, from love and friendship to becoming a parent, struggling with substance abuse, and loss.
